David strolled into his office as calm and casual as usual. He focused on the whispers and sobs of his employees listening to their mumblings about the dead woman. Entering his office without a word, the killer closed the door behind him and shut them away. James would show later, his face appeared as if he had aged ten years overnight. David stared at the man, a single thought in his head. He should not have been able to resist. This thought nagged at him for most of the morning. Something was not right.
After lunch, a group of officers appeared at the office and started asking questions. They still had no motive and did not understand the condition of the body, but began covering all bases for just in case. The staff was exhausted and looked like hell, but many of them sat for questioning and then went home as David had instructed them. He also closed the office for the following day. Davidâs attempt to seem human did not fool many. Those closest to Amanda knew her death was no accident, but they had no proof.
The final questioning of the day, David waited with patience and cunning as the detective approached his office. "Mr. Thornbrook, I am detective Moss, Gainesville PD. May I have a word?
âSure come right in.â David rose to greet the officer; a fake expression of grief adorned his chiseled features. The detective began to speak. âI've been speaking with your employees today about Amanda Primrose. They are all quite upset about her death. I'm sure you heard about it as well. You seem quite nonchalant, about it though, closing the office at the end of the day instead of sending people home earlier.â
David, a blank stare on his face rebutted. âWell, you have been asking a lot of questions, I figured that I could let staff leave after you were done with them and close up tomorrow. She was a valued employee and will be missed by all.â
Making note of his statement the detective could sense something sinister in the manâs tone. David toyed with him and it was obvious. The detective continued. âIn speaking with your employees, they all seem to agree with one thing. You and Amanda was having a heated affair and you two didnât mind where you explored your desires. You wanna expound on that?â The detective studied the man hoping to find clues of fabrication, a twitch, a glance in the wrong direction even a heavy sigh. However, once again David played along.
"Detective Moss, Amanda, and I were lovers. We enjoyed sex and we experimented whenever the itch arose. Now as her boss, yes that is a bad practice, but itâs not against our policies and she was a consenting adult.â His matter of fact opinion did not startle the detective, but it gave off a ârich kid can do anythingâ kind of flair that sickened the seasoned law man just beneath the surface. Moss continued his line of questions.
"So
